A friend of mine wrecked a forklift about a month ago. The runway where they normally drove it had a hole in the floor and they covered it up and didn't put up a warning sign. When he drove over the area, the forklift went and turned over on its side.

One difference in a used forklift and a used car is that you can write off depreciation at tax time. You can't get away with that for a car. The exception would be if you had a car that was used exclusively for business.

Plants that don't use forklifts are just asking for liability issues, especially injury liability. Forklifts reduce the number of injuries caused by moving material around inside a factory. While the short term cost of buying a forklift may seem hefty, the long term savings in liability claims will more than pay for the forklift.

What type of factories are you in that do not use forklifts? That statement seems a little odd. I have never been inside of a factory that hasn't had one. Maybe you weren't in the right part of the factory. Either event, they are marvelous tools.

Forklifts and cars are indeed investments that are sometimes best made with used ones. As with cars, the only difference in nearly new cars or forklifts and brand new ones is that someone else has paid for depreciation. Of course, in the case of forklifts, you can recoup the depreciation in the form of tax rebates.
