An Unfamiliar Device in a Common Application

Sometimes, a new concept or a new type of machine that you just learned about is used frequently in something you do know about. If you don’t work in an industrial environment, then the basics of a flow meter may seem foreign. It is common to see a mass flow controller as part of a system, such as that for making beer. Beermaking requires the correct filling of the vats. Also, it is necessary to apply the exact amount of gas for making a particular brew. Some companies use the amount and consistency of foam in the beer as a trademark, for the look or the taste, or both.

After drinking a beer, it may be hard to envision it flowing through all the pipes to metal containers in a network of metallic equipment. This is pretty much how it is done though. Nowadays, something as sophisticated as an ultrasonic flow meter is not unheard of in a brewery. Operators can even monitor the process via computer. This would never have been imagined hundreds of years ago, but it is possible today. Perhaps it makes the job easier, but I’m sure that when their day is done, a beermaker will still want to sit down themselves and have a pint.
