There are Weddings and then there are Weddings

I’ve only been to a small number of weddings in my lifetime – no more than five or six and they’ve ranged in size from “can’t they afford a cake” to “you could have fed a small African nation on this budget”. It’s kind of funny to see the various different definitions of weddings that many people have and the kind of money and time they’re willing to invest into them. I suppose, if you really truly assume you will spend the rest of your life with someone, it is worth the money. Funnily enough, it is usually the second or third weddings that result in much less fanfare and wedding koozie gifts instead of $500 gift bags.

I’ve actually received both before – one time receiving a bag of expensive gift certificates, electronics and a fancy new tie, another time receiving a bag with a couple of beer koozies, some stadium cups, and a small box of chocolates. Of course, I don’t feel anyone at the wedding deserves any gifts (not that the $500 gift bag was not well received), as it is not their day, but it is a nice gesture and one that almost anyone will willingly make.
