Every year, for Mother’s Day, my mother and I would go to different spas in town for different spa treatments. Last year, for a change, we decided that we would like to go away for the weekend to a luxury spa and be totally pampered. Our husbands decided that we both deserved it and we started to plan our weekend away with no kids.

We took part in many different treatments, such as pedicures, mud wraps and massages. The thing I will remember most about the trip, though, was our time spent at the outdoor spas. It was there that we started opening up to each other.

We shared so much that weekend and learned what we really meant to each other. I knew my mother loved me, but until we actually poured out our hearts, I did not realize the depths of that love. We left as two completely different people.

Two weeks later, my mother was killed in a car accident. That weekend means more to me now than any other weekend of my life. What an amazing mom and what an amazing change in plans from our usual celebratory weekend.  I feel so blessed to have had her for those three days – I really miss her.
