Planning To Build: Need Floor Plan
By Valerie on Apr 27, 2009 in Real Estate
Planning to build a home? If so one of the first steps in the process is getting a floor plan in place. Even if you have an idea of what you would like the outside of the home to look like, you need to determine the layout of the inside. This is not as simple as simply choosing the locations of each of the rooms. Rather, you need to understand the requirements here. For example, a home’s layout is dependent on the foundation, the size of each room, and even the location of required support beams. It can be a very complex job!
For this reason, it is often best to find some house plans online or through other sources. Some people believe these are too limiting, but they have not seen the extent of the options available to them. There are some outstanding house floor plans available. Best of all, most of them can easily be tweaked here and there to improve their overall design to fit the home builder’s requirements or your own special needs. This is an outstanding opportunity for individuals to build the house of their dreams while still meeting special local requirements or structural requirements of a home.

I think that free floor plans are a great idea. You may not find exactly what you want, but you can get some great ideas. It also at least gets you started on the process.

So where were some sites that you found house plans at? I’m not finding a lot online. I don’t know if I am just not doing a proper search or if I am missing something.

Of course, remember that you get what you pay for. Be sure that the plans will be usable and not copyrighted. You may also want to get you an online drawing program to help design your own floor plan.

If nothing else, these plans can get you going in the right direction and thinking about the task to come. Anything you learn in a process is helpful whether you realize it or not.

Contact your local building inspector as well. They may be able to point you in the right direction for floor plans that are not only useful, but passed code.
