Holidays We Ought To Celebrate

The majority of people celebrate the major holidays in some way or another despite the fact that these people may not be religious. Christmas, Easter, Halloween, Thanksgiving … these are the holidays that everyone is familiar with and that everyone celebrates. But what about those times of the year that come around and cause us to engage in annual rituals but which don’t get a whole lot of celebration?
This time of year is a great example - the time of year when students are all going back to school. We engage in rituals at this time of year - we head to the discount school supply store to stock up on this year’s school supplies. But we don’t often celebrate the fact that we are going back to school. Perhaps we should start having more of those back-to-school parties that some teens throw as an excuse to have a celebration.
Celebrations are important. They allow us to focus on what it is that is going on in our lives right now. And they give us a reason to get together with the people that we care about despite the fact that life is busy and hectic and we all have other things that we maybe ought to be doing. The more "holidays" we can come up with, the better for us all!
