New Career for Me
By Valerie on Apr 23, 2009 in Education
I recently got a public health masters from ATSU. I never envisioned myself getting this degree when I was a young undergrad. I started out in the business school at Ohio State University and when I graduated I went into consumer products. Then my husband and I moved out to Arizona and I started working in the dental field. As I got more involved in the field of dentistry, I started looking at different degrees that would be a good degree to further my career. I chose a public health degree over a master of health administration because of my work with children. The degree that I got was focused more on public policy, than the administrative side. I like the fact that I learned more of the background then just how to administratively do it.
Recently, I was made a part of the Arizona Dental Associations action team. This is a team that works at the state level in helping policies get voted into existence that helps to protect and increase dental rights for all. It is amazing that my business degree helped to morph into a career that combined my other two loves of politics and dentistry.

Congrats on your new degree, I’m sure it will open a whole lot of new doors for you. I really want to get a masters degree in marketing. Hopefully soon I’ll have the money to do so!

Consumer products is a great field, but I’m glad that you found your calling in public health care. I’m just finishing business school now and I’m so glad to be done!

I just got laid off from my job, so I’m going to take this opportunity to go back to school online to get my public health degree. Instead of getting depressed that I lost my job, I’m excited for the possibilities of another degree!

Being a full-time waitress allows me the time and flexibility to continue my education by taking classes online. I’m able to work the lunch and dinner shifts and then do my homework in between or after I get home at night.

I live in Phoenix, Arizona right now and I really love the year-round weather, except for when it gets so hot in the summer. Good luck with your new degree! I’m sure it will come in handy.

I work in public health administration, and it is a challenging career. I’m really glad I got into it there. There are so many opportunities no matter where my wife and I move to if she gets a promotion to another city.

I think that I will always be into politics in the community, no matter where I move to. I like being involved in community events and it feels so good to know that I’m raising awareness and helping others.

It so good that you are using your dental experience to make a difference with the action team. Getting laws passed that will help dental patients and others in the community is really important.
