Acronyms and the Language of Education
By VL on Dec 13, 2009 in Education
Have you ever noticed that education has its own language? Sure you actually learn your schooling in the language that you speak. However there are words and phrases and acronyms that are used in school that you don’t use very many places. Careers also have their own languages at times so educational settings may have their own language as well as the second language of the career.
Take for example the industry of being a physician’s assistant. This career uses certain acronyms that people outside of the career field might not recognize. PA is short for physician’s assistant, of course. You might also hear DPT which relates to physical therapy.
Now let’s look at the education of the students who go into this career. You will hear them talk about taking online pa programs and participating in transitional dpt programs. They are adopting the language of the career. You will also hear about them taking finals, for example. That’s an education term; you don’t hear that outside of the classroom. Someone who is taking a final in his pa class is taking the last class of the semester in his physician’s assistant studies.
Do you know the language of the field in which you plan to work and study?
