Invest in Training for Your Employees

trainingBusiness owners who are trying to cut expenses may make the mistake of cutting back on training for their staff. This is an error because it often ends up costing the business more than it saves. That’s because a well-trained employee will make fewer mistakes and will do his or her work more efficiently than an employee who hasn’t been properly trained.

Imagine a business owner who operates a landscaping company. He hires someone new to operate the company’s gravel screening machines. He assumes that this person’s previous experience working with compost screens makes him capable of doing the job without additional training. The first day on the job the employee ruins a machine because he doesn’t use it properly. The business owner now has to replace the machine and still has to train the employee.

Of course, there are cases in which training truly isn’t necessary. A business may have done training for computer programs that are now commonly used (such as Excel). If the company is only doing this training out of habit then it could be time to adjust those habits and get rid of that training. However, most training is better done than not done. Look carefully at your training programs before cutting them to save on costs.
